What is SEO and why is it important for your website
January 20, 2023
Today I’m going to tell you about something that may sound like a secret science fiction password: SEO. No, it’s not a new alien species, but rather an abbreviation of the words “Search Engine Optimization”. It sounds scary, but I promise it’s quite friendly and if you have your own website it could be your new best friend :)

But let’s start from the beginning – what exactly is SEO and why is it so important? Well, when you type something into a search engine (like Google), you hope to find answers to questions, find products, or simply discover interesting new websites. Good SEO helps a website rank higher in search results, which means more visitors, more traffic, and more opportunities to get customers.

Now, before you start thinking that SEO is some kind of black magic that only works for a select few, let me reassure you. You don’t need to be a coding expert or have superpowers to start enjoying the benefits of SEO. There are many simple and effective ways that you can apply right now to improve the visibility of your website in search engines.

Remember that SEO is a process that takes time, patience and constant work. Don’t expect immediate results, but be systematic and consistent.

Good SEO practices on your website

1.

Find the right key words

Keywords are the words you enter into a search engine when you are looking for something. For example, if you are an interior designer and want your website to appear in search results for people searching for an interior designer, then the keyword “interior designer” is important to you. Use keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner to find popular and relevant keywords related to your industry.

2.

Optimize page title and description

SEO title and SEO description are two extremely important components of your website positioning strategy. Make sure that each of your website pages, as well as each blog entry, if you run one, have both of these elements completed. The content you will include in them will be visible to the user using the Google search engine, their attractiveness will determine whether people will click on them and visit your website.

Put the most important keywords at the beginning of the title (SEO title). Remember that the title should be concise (about 70 characters) but informative at the same time. The SEO description can be a bit longer (around 160 characters), make sure it encourages further reading.

3.

Create unique and informative content

Create a blog on your website where you will regularly publish articles related to your industry. This will not only help you get more visitors, but also increase your chances of appearing in Google results. Remember, however, that the content of the posts should be addressed to your target group. Put the right keywords in the content, but remember that you are writing for a human and not feeding the search engine algorithm, keep it natural.

4.

Organize well the page structure

Organize your page content with appropriate headings (H1, H2, etc.). Use headings logically and hierarchically to make content easier to navigate and understand.

5.

Improve the loading speed

One of the most important factors that affects the position of your website in the search engine is its loading speed. Make sure you use the right size images, if they are too large they will cause delays in loading your content. Compress them to the desired size, you can do it with the help of free compressors available online. Use the “lazy loading” technique, which consists in loading images and other resources only when they are needed, e.g. when the user scrolls the page. This will allow for faster initial page loading.

6.

Create links

Make sure to build internal links (links between individual pages on your own website) and external links (links from other websites).

7.

Make it easy to access on mobile

Make sure your website is responsive and looks good on different mobile devices. Today’s devices have screens of various sizes, already at the stage of designing a website, you must remember that the content should look good regardless of the resolution of your visitor’s monitor.
